How to Know if You Own and Control Your Domain:

Owning and controling your domain is essential to your business.

Ownership means that you are the Registrant on the domain. Check by doing a "WHOIS" search.

Go to and do a WHOIS search:

Make sure you are in the "Registrant" field. If it's not you, you don't own it, and short of negotiating with the "Registrant", you could be in a situation where you have to go to court, and without a trademark, you're likely stuck. Imagine how that would affect your business, if you lost your domain name? (the Registrant can do whatever they want with it) Having the same business name registed with the government doesn't really matter to the ownership of the domain name.

Control means that you are the administrative contact on the domain account, for each domain. To check this, login to your account, and see who the administrative email goes to. If it's not you, you don't have control, and you need to change it. Whoever gets the email for the administrative contact, can control your site, and your email.
